Socks for Japan

Hi, for those of you who might not have SMB, this is the post regarding the donation drive for Japan. Please do your best to support us!

Dear Xinmin students,

I am very sure everyone knows the unfortunate event that struck Japan on 11 March 2011. It was indeed one of the worst earthquakes that struck the world in our modern history which followed by tsunami. With 8000-9000 people still missing, the death toll could easily reach 16000. The Japanese are still battling with nuclear and humanitarian crisis as you are reading this now. As if, earthquake, tsunami and nuclear danger are not enough, the Japanese has to experience a severe winter right now.

Looking back home, we are indeed blessed with beautiful nation that is free from natural disaster. But, let us not forget the Japanese and people around the world that are constantly living in fear because their countries are prone to natural disaster.

So what can we do to help them???

Today, at 10am (Japanese time), the Ibaragi Prefectural Government Department of Health and Welfare made a request that people around the world to deliver socks immediately. “We have no socks!” the representative said. This is following a severe winter that hit Japan right now.

In view of that, Class 407, Boys’ Brigade (BB) and Student Leaders Board (SLB) has come together to take up this project which is called “WINTER SOCKS FOR JAPAN”. All human beings are comforted by a fresh, clean pair of socks and people need lots of them in disastrous times without running water.

Each student will be asked/strongly encouraged to donate at least one pairs of winter socks with an enclosed “Care Letter”. Of course, you can donate more. The Japanese people really treasure letters/short notes, especially ones from foreigners. Victims of the 1995 Hanshin quake in Kobe said that care letters were among the most uplifting items they received. It would be very meaningful, if you could use your own saving or pocket money to buy a warm pairs of socks to the Japanese. Imagine the smile in their faces when they receive the socks you’ve donated and reading your short letter? I think, no words could describe on how thankful they will be after receiving the socks and short notes from you. [You will be given a small piece of paper to write something to the Japanese]

On top of that, we would like to engage every parent/guardian in this donation drive. Each student will be given one piece of envelope to be brought home on Tuesday. Please pass it to your parents/guardians so that they can donate any amount that they are comfortable with. With this money, we can buy even more winter socks. Students will bring back the envelope on Wednesday (regardless of whether your parents want to donate or not) and pass it to your fellow friends from either 407, BB or SLB that will be collecting them during morning flag raising.

After which, we will send the winter socks by next weekend so that the Japanese can receive them as soon as possible. We are sending the socks to Mr. Jason Kelly, as volunteer based in Tokyo, who set-up the campaign on “Socks for Japan”. He will help us to distribute the socks.

Let’s come together and shows the Japanese what is Xinmin Spirit!!! Let’s come together to help those in need.

Lastly, please always remember to keep the Japanese people in your daily prayers. May God bless the Japanese people in overcoming the crisis.

Best regards,

Mr Duncan Hiew, Mr Tang, Mrs Susan Ng and Mr Jason Chew

Note:

§ More details will be given during Monday’s Flag raising and during Form Teacher’s period on Tuesday morning.

§ As for now, you can start buying socks for this project during the weekend. But please make sure it is for winter or thick enough to keep them warm.

Food for Thought - Will Singapore Make It If Disaster Strikes?

Boys

For those who had attended the RTC/LDC Camp, you would have hear about what i have shared on Total Defence and the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The gist is, psychological resilience is important to keep a nation going when disaster strikes.
