Our ex-BB Boy from Instructor Hong You's batch

Volunteering to upgrade his Physical Employment Status (PES) one month before his Operationally Ready Date (ORD) and to extend his National Service (NS) are not things that an ordinary Full-Time National Serviceman (NSF) is willing to do. But Corporal (CPL) Joseph Leong is no ordinary NSF. "He is a positive and diligent soldier who takes pride in his work in ensuring its quality before submission. His contributions in HRSC extend beyond his job scope as an Administrative Support Assistant (ASA)," said Lieutenant Colonel (NS) Ng Buck Hoe, who is CPL Leong's branch head.

CPL Leong works as an Injury Management ASA at the Human Resource Service Centre (HRSC), and his job scope includes processing service injury cases and putting them up for approval.

Such is his passion and dedication to serve that CPL Leong works tirelessly with units to clear as many injury cases as he can each day. He had even requested to be upgraded to a higher PES and attended PES C Basic Military Training (BMT) for better deployability. "I feel that I am able to do more for the country," he said. However, despite his attempts to upgrade his PES, he was again assessed to be non-combat fit, and still serves as an Injury Management ASA. Nonetheless, he does not feel disappointed and is happy to continue serving injured servicemen to the best of his ability.

Earlier this month, Chief of Defence Force (CDF) Lieutenant-General (LG) Neo Kian Hong presented him with the CDF Commander's Coin when he visited Personnel Command (PERSCOM). The Coin was awarded in recognition of his outstanding efforts in enhancing organisational excellence and operational readiness.

Besides CPL Leong, three other staff from PERSCOM, namely Major (MAJ) Quek Meng Cher from Human Resource (HR) Institute, Ms Wee Soo Chin from HR System and Corporal First Class Jeremy Lin from NS Service Centre also received the coin.

CPL Leong had also volunteered to extend his National Service under the Voluntary Extension of Service scheme. "My university term starts around May and my initial ORD was in January, so during this interim period where I have no plans, I would like to do something I'm more comfortable with and continue serving."

His dedication and exemplary attitude are commendable, and besides the CDF Commander's Coin, he was also presented the Best Soldier award for January this year.

The CDF Commander's Coin is an informal means of recognition for servicemen and women who have displayed professional excellence, personal commitment and dedication while performing beyond the call of duty.

It is given selectively to about 20 servicemen and women each year. Nominations are usually from the unit or formation commanders via a citation, recording the details of their efforts and contributions. Based on these recommendations, CDF will then select the recipients of the award.
