Making Singapore an Inclusive Society

Dear Boys,

Today marks the 51st year of independence we have enjoyed as Singaporeans. As Singapore progressed, you and me have the privilege to attend school, and to be an educated, fine young man. I say it is a privilege because many children in the rest of the world may not have this chance to learn in an environment like ours. Some are affected by war, poverty, famine, diseases and gender inequality. (read this https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2013/jul/12/war-denying-children-education and http://www.unicef.org/education/bege_70640.html) So, be appreciative and thankful for the opportunities you have.

As younger Singaporeans are increasingly educated, there is a possibility that we may neglect the less fortunate around us as we pursue our education and other desires of our heart. I took this picture during the last BBCARES outing at Bishan Park. I hope that though this session, you and me are more aware of the less fortunate in the society and extending help to those in need. I hope that you will continue to show your care to the less fortunate outside of the BBCARES context.

United we stand, divided we fall. We can only stand as a united Singapore if we care.

Blessed National Day & Happy 51st Singapore!

Mr Bay

BB Blaze 2016

Hello Boys,

Today I would like to share about my reflection regarding BB Blaze, which happened on 9th April 2016. I am proud to say that our Company secured top 10 positions in the competition, with 2 of our 3 teams placing 4th and 7th place.

I feel very thankful that our Company was able to achieve 4th and 7th place in BB Blaze. This would not have been possible if our team did not push ourselves and had the mindset to aim for the best. With our effort and teamwork we managed to do well for the competition.

The competition itself was tough and had different activities which were exhausting both mentally and physically. However, with the encouragement of my teammates I managed to persevere onward. BB Blaze made us step up of our comfort zone and push us to the limits. During the competition I faced difficulties continuing due to leg cramps but with the help of the team I did not give up and end up forfeiting  the competition.

Ultimately the values of resilience and teamwork which I have learnt from BB Blaze is beneficial for one's personal character and leadership, which I strongly believe will be important to the juniors as well as the future leaders of BB45th. I hope that you guys can aim higher and strive for a better future for BB45th.

SSG Amenser Ong

Servant Leadership

Dear Boys,

It has been a long time since i last posted an article. Yesterday, i shared about this concept 'Servant Leadership' during devotion and i would like to elaborate it further. It is built on 2 keywords - 'Servant' and 'Leadership'. The idea is this - As a leader, you serve the people whom you are leading.

How can we be servant leaders? It begins with leading with others in mind. I would like to share an article i have found online (http://www.skipprichard.com/9-qualities-of-the-servant-leader/) which will further explain the qualities of a servant leader.

A servant leader is one who:

1. Values diverse opinions.
A servant leader values everyone’s contributions and regularly seeks out opinions.  If you must parrot back the leader’s opinion, you are not in a servant-led organization.

2. Cultivates a culture of trust.
People don’t meet at the water cooler to gossip.

3.  Develops other leaders.
The replication factor is so important.  It means teaching others to lead, providing opportunities for growth and demonstrating by example.  That means the leader is not always leading, but instead giving up power and deputizing others to lead.

4.  Helps people with life issues (not just work issues).
It’s important to offer opportunities for personal development beyond the job.  Let’s say you run a company program to lose weight, or lower personal debt, or a class on etiquette.  None of these may help an immediate corporate need, but each may be important.

5.  Encourages.
The hallmark of a servant leader is encouragement.  And a true servant leader says, “Let’s go do it,” not, “You go do it.”

6.  Sells instead of tells.
A servant leader is the opposite of a dictator. It’s a style all about persuading, not commanding. A servant leader leads with conviction.

7.  Thinks “you,” not “me.”
There’s a selfless quality about a servant leader.  Someone who is thinking only, “How does this benefit me?” is disqualified.

8.  Thinks long-term.
A servant leader is thinking about the next generation, the next leader, the next opportunity. That means a tradeoff between what’s important today versus tomorrow, and making choices to benefit the future.

9.  Acts with humility.
The leader doesn’t wear a title as a way to show who’s in charge, doesn’t think he’s better than everyone else, and acts in a way to care for others.  She may, in fact, pick up the trash or clean up a table.  Setting an example of service, the servant leader understands that it is not about the leader, but about others.

9 Qualities of the Servant Leader

1: Values diverse opinions
2: Cultivates a culture of trust
3: Develops other leaders
4: Helps people with life issues
5: Encourages
6: Sells instead of tells
7: Thinks you, not me
8: Thinks long-term
9: Acts with humility

I hope the devotion and sharing session give you a better understanding on servant leadership and build you to be a servant leader.
