BBSG 2012

Dear Boys,

Once again, the annual Boys' Brigade Share-A-Gift Project is here. This year, we are taking this project from a different perspective. Instead of doing collection at NTUC, we would be going to BBHQ.

BBHQ is the heart of the project. At BBHQ, you would be able to see the HQ staff and BB officers/primers coordinate the movements of every Boy at all the collection booths and how the food donation are sorted out. Some of the fortunate ones would be given the chance to do delivery, ie delivery the food hamper to the less fortunate.

BBSG aims to bring a smile to the less fortunate during the festive season because Christmas is a period of giving.

So, your attendance is important to make this project a success.

Please report to the school on 3&4th Dec at 7.25am in Full Uniform. Bring along your BB Blue Polo Tee and PT kit. You will be dismissed from Xinmin at 9.30pm

Regards,
Mr Bay

From The Verge of DQ to the Mention in Awards Presentation, The Lord's Name is to be Praised

Dear Boys,

This post is dedicated to the CQ teams.

First and foremost, I want to thank and congratulate both CQ teams for doing well in the recent CQ competition. At the same time, i would also like to pen down my thoughts for learning and reflection purposes. Remember to Thank God for it!

I apologise for the mix-up in the attires. When we reach PHS at 7.30am, Mr Ting and i had a short conversation to discuss what we should do with the wrong attire. After 15 mins, we reached a conclusion - to send your back to change so that we will not be forfeited. When you were on your way back to change, we prayed to God to lead us out of the situation. I remembered talking to Jerrell and Kerry that it seemed like how God wanted to test our obedience & trust in Him. When G was late, i remembered the marshals were all panicking.

But Thank God that G managed to get a cab and reach PHS in time. I'm also impressed by your attitude to continue trying and not giving up when faced with such pressing situations.

Key learning point: Always check and recheck information

I'm glad your did well in the theory and outdoor component. And its your achievement that one of the teams managed to get to the 12th placing.

There are also some key points i want to highlight:
1. During the Awards Ceremony, the GOH, Ven Wong mentioned this line - One thing you collect, but will never collect dust, is your character quality. I find this line very true and appropriate because your character will be tested by time and shown to the people around you. Only time and people will tell how great a son/friend/colleague/manager/boy friend/husband/father you are. I hope that you will apply the lessons learnt from studying Abraham, Gideon and Jonah in your own life as well.

If you need help, please approach any of the teachers or officers.

2. As leaders, don't be afraid to ask questions. CSM and ACSM bombarded questions after questions at me via whatsapp. I think it is a good sign because it shows that they are learning to understand the Bible stories. Keep up the good work. The key point i want to bring up is - Do ask questions if it helps you to understand your own train of thought.

This also means that as a leader, you have to be prepared to take questions and answer them accordingly.

Lastly, CQ teams, please keep Tuesday night free for appreciation dinner :)

Thank you once again for your hard work,
Mr Bay

Hi Boys.

there are a few things i need to address.

1. Boys taking Drills Stage 2 (Platoon 2 + Jerrell + Kerry + Jowin + Javen + YeeLok)

there is another component that you are not tested on yet. it is the 'Method of Instructions'. you would need to select a drill movement to teach your fellow platoon mates. it can be any drill movement, even just Sedi-a (but you may not get a good score because it's too easy). follow the guidelines in your Drill 2 theory notes (teaching formations etc.) this will be tested on 15th Sept, which is the next parade. please prepare this well because it is 20% of the overall.

2. Boys who missed the theory test (either Drill 1 or Drill 2)

Boys under this category will have to take the test on Wednesday, 12 Sept. you CSM will make further arrangements. please study hard because this is 20%.

3. Boys who missed the practical test (either Drill 1 or Drill 2)

Boys under this category, please be prepared to take the practical on 15th Sept.

Good luck everybody and please pass this in one try.

Regards,
CLT Nicholas Chang

Relationships: Why Can They Be So Scary?

Why are relationship struggles so disappointing? Why do the problems we have with other people affect us so powerfully? Why is relational disappointment one of the hardest disappointments for all of us to face? Let me suggest some reasons.
1. You were created to be a social being. You and I were never designed to live in isolation. We were not wired to be distant from and unaffected by the people around us. In fact, since we were created in God's likeness, desire for and participation in community is a fundamental part of our humanity. The God who made us in his likeness not only does community, he is a community! To deny this aspect of your daily life would literally be to deny your humanity. There would be something dramatically wrong with you if you removed yourself completely from other people. What this means is that the hurts of relationships cut deep. In a real way they touch the essence of who God made you to be, and because of this they are not to be taken lightly.

2. We all tend to enter our relationships with unrealistic expectations. Somehow, someway, we are able to swindle ourselves into thinking that we will be able to avoid the difficulties that attend any relationship in this broken world. In the early days of a relationship we work to convince ourselves that we are more righteous, and the other person more perfect, than we and they actually are. This causes us to be shocked when an unexpected but inevitable difficulty gets in the way of the bliss that we had convinced ourselves that we had finally found. Here is where the Bible is so helpful. It is very honest about the messiness and disappointment that everyone deals with in every relationship they have.

3. We all tend to seek to get identity from our relationships. What does this mean? It means that we tend to look for fundamental personal meaning, purpose and sense of well-being from other people. In doing this, we turn people into our own personal messiahs, seeking to get from them what no other human being is ever able to deliver. That other person is not supposed to be the thing that gets you up in the morning. They are not to be what makes life worth living for you. When they are in this place, you have given them too much power and you are asking of them something that no flawed human being can ever pull off. On the other hand, when you are getting your foundational sense of well-being from the Lord, you are then able to step into the inevitable messiness of relationships this side of heaven, and be neither anxious nor self-protective.

4. We tend to be disappointed in our relationships because they were more about the purposes of our little kingdoms of self than they were about the kingdom of God. Without being aware of it, our relationships are often about what we want out of our lives rather than what God wants for our lives. So we have an "I love you and have a wonderful plan for your life," approach to relationships with other people. Often we are disappointed with a relationship at the exact moment when God is producing through this relationship exactly what he wanted to produce. Our problem is that our agenda doesn't agree with God's!
So, there are reasons for our disappointments but there is grace for them as well. The God who will take us where we did not plan to go in order to produce in us what we could not achieve on our own, will also give us the grace to hang in there as he uses the messy disappointment of relationships to change and grow us and others.
God bless

Paul David Tripp

Food for Thought

Dear Boys,

It has been a long while since i wrote in this blog. I want to dedicate this blog post to you.

For the past 3 weeks, there had been alot of activities going on in 45th.

On top of regular parades, we had an annual Enrollment Service on 1st April. I want to thank everyone who made an effort to go for the rehearsal and service. This shows that you put in an effort to participate in the activities that the officers and instructors had designed/assigned you.

Our BB Blaze teams have also been training hard for the BB Blaze competition this Saturday. I have met them on Good Friday for cycling and Easter Sunday for kayaking. I'm glad to say that i have enjoyed these sessions with them.

To BB Blaze team: try to come in as fast as you can. I promise you i will bring your back from YJC as fast as i can (within the specified time agreement).

At the same time, I couldn't help but wonder, what have we achieved in BB45th? What have we done well? We have done well in terms of JMF achievement,  BB parades and activities. BUT, does JMF Gold equate to excellence in every area of BB45th? I think the answer is no.

Firstly, in the midst of fighting to achieve JMF Gold, we may lost values that are important to us. Two of it that i can think of right now is: 1) Mindset for Excellence and 2) Discipline. Why do i say so?

I see alot of people just 'going through the motion' during parades and activities so as not to be punished. For example, some just attend parade so that they do not get any demerit points. I have always believed that your attitude will lead to your behavior. A bo-chup behaviour from someone shows that he/she has a 'cannot be bothered' attitude.

This mentality itself has serious implication. If we entrust such a person with leadership appointments and responsibilities, what do you think the outcome will be? A person who is going through the motion will never do well because he/she does not have the drive to excel. Similarly, a person who goes to the school without putting in the drive to excel will never do well.

Ask Boys or instructors such as PTE Junrui, SGT Ashley and CLT Nichloas and they will tell you the effort they put in to do well for their EOY or O levels. (Side note: Congrats!)

The second issue that i am going to address is the discipline level in BB45th. Recent observations in parades, camps and activities have shown that overall discipline level has declined over the years. So much so that Boys do not even know how to address officers. This is something we, as a company, must address before it gets worse. There were several suggestions from the officers and teachers regarding how to improve the discipline level of the BB45th. This is something we, as a officer council, will mull over.

So have we lost all that we have gained? I think not.

Why do i say that? Because i have seen the effort put in by BB Blaze team to prepare for the competition, Because i have seen the effort each one of us (including the Instructors, teachers and officers) in raising funds for BB Week. Based on preliminary calculations, we may be able to raise $4000 as a company. Thank you for your effort, everyone. You effort is appreciated. This shows that if we put a realistic goal in mind and work towards it, we can achieve it.

Do we have alot to improve on? Yes. So how can we improve BB45th?

My challenge to everyone is to excel in all responsibilities that you are entrusted to. Every appointment/responsibilities/rank is a act of faith that the officer, teachers and I have entrusted upon you. Do it to your best capability.

There will also be some minor revisions in parades. Keep a lookout for it.

We will also be making revisions to our promotion criteria. There may be several things we want to add in so that the rank each one of you are wearing has more value and more importantly, an achievement.

Last but not least, we are never perfect, so lets make 2012 a year that we make improvements.

Our ex-BB Boy from Instructor Hong You's batch

Volunteering to upgrade his Physical Employment Status (PES) one month before his Operationally Ready Date (ORD) and to extend his National Service (NS) are not things that an ordinary Full-Time National Serviceman (NSF) is willing to do. But Corporal (CPL) Joseph Leong is no ordinary NSF. "He is a positive and diligent soldier who takes pride in his work in ensuring its quality before submission. His contributions in HRSC extend beyond his job scope as an Administrative Support Assistant (ASA)," said Lieutenant Colonel (NS) Ng Buck Hoe, who is CPL Leong's branch head.

CPL Leong works as an Injury Management ASA at the Human Resource Service Centre (HRSC), and his job scope includes processing service injury cases and putting them up for approval.

Such is his passion and dedication to serve that CPL Leong works tirelessly with units to clear as many injury cases as he can each day. He had even requested to be upgraded to a higher PES and attended PES C Basic Military Training (BMT) for better deployability. "I feel that I am able to do more for the country," he said. However, despite his attempts to upgrade his PES, he was again assessed to be non-combat fit, and still serves as an Injury Management ASA. Nonetheless, he does not feel disappointed and is happy to continue serving injured servicemen to the best of his ability.

Earlier this month, Chief of Defence Force (CDF) Lieutenant-General (LG) Neo Kian Hong presented him with the CDF Commander's Coin when he visited Personnel Command (PERSCOM). The Coin was awarded in recognition of his outstanding efforts in enhancing organisational excellence and operational readiness.

Besides CPL Leong, three other staff from PERSCOM, namely Major (MAJ) Quek Meng Cher from Human Resource (HR) Institute, Ms Wee Soo Chin from HR System and Corporal First Class Jeremy Lin from NS Service Centre also received the coin.

CPL Leong had also volunteered to extend his National Service under the Voluntary Extension of Service scheme. "My university term starts around May and my initial ORD was in January, so during this interim period where I have no plans, I would like to do something I'm more comfortable with and continue serving."

His dedication and exemplary attitude are commendable, and besides the CDF Commander's Coin, he was also presented the Best Soldier award for January this year.

The CDF Commander's Coin is an informal means of recognition for servicemen and women who have displayed professional excellence, personal commitment and dedication while performing beyond the call of duty.

It is given selectively to about 20 servicemen and women each year. Nominations are usually from the unit or formation commanders via a citation, recording the details of their efforts and contributions. Based on these recommendations, CDF will then select the recipients of the award.
