Newspaper article on SGB

Hi Boys

In order to encourage your to read widely, i have scanned and posted an article that appeared on 18th Nov in Straits Times.

For those who have seen the video on the revamp of Mdm Ang's house last saturday...this article will give you a better understanding about why we chose to revamp her house.

Mr Bay
Hey guys, here's the updated schedule. Click on it to enlarge.

PLEASE e-mail me your preferred dates, even if you like yours already. This is to ensure that I have your e-mail and contact number, and also to ensure if I can move your duty or not, as other people may need your duty slot.

Treat it as a personal request, but I really need you guys to e-mail me your contact numbers. And help me tell your friends as well? Only about 15 people have e-mailed me so far. Can you help me spread to your friends in BB? And I thought people like Jun Ji would be nice enough to e-mail me. T_T

Please help ok! This is so that we can have a comprehensive contact list to easily contact everyone. Thanks very much.

On another note, please download the Grandparents' day indemnity form if you're coming, get your parents to sign and bring it on Sunday.

Post Exam Review and Important Info

Hi Boys

For those who have missed today's session, don't worry, i have changed my stance to optional attendance. The reason being is because it's a learning opportunity for the NCOs to plan a company activity and i trust that they have learnt much from their failures as well.

Next, some of your may have missed important briefings so this is what i have said today.

1. Company discipline level - the general discipline is still quite lax. There is a need to improve. E.g. proper decorum in classroom such as greeting officers and the way you talk to the officers and instructors.

2. Test - there are some of your who have failed adventure. The most general explanations i get from Boys is your did not bother to study. Thus, from 2010 onwards, there is only 1 test and 1 retest. If you do not pass your retest, i will take it as you have failed the core award for that year.

3. Rank and promotions - do note that your attendance, discipline and your performance in school and BB will be considered when we decide on promotions. Do note that the school does keep track of discipline issues and we can consult the HOD Discipline if there are discrepancies.

4. Parade format in 2010 - There will be some changes. The last saturday for every month will be designated parade sessions. This will give us more time to plan outdoor activities and have a more practical aspect of badgework.

Do talk to me or Mr Tan if you have problems.

5. SGB
Every Boy will have to clear 2 sessions (each from 9am to 9pm) as part of their CIP and Community Service Badgework.

There will be a training session on 14 Nov . The reporting time in Xinmin is 9am and your will be dismissed at 2pm.

6. Grandparents Day
Do note the details in the consent form.

Post Exam Activity

Hi all,

Sorry for the late notice but there is a parade on 23 Oct, which is tomorrow. There will only be games so no need to wear full uniform. The details are as follows

Time: 0930 - 1500
Venue: Xinmin Secondary School (Rpt outside the com lab)
Dress Code: PT Kit (plt 1 can wear your PE shirt, Plt 2 & 3 wear your Coy tee)

Attendance is compulsory

Do remember to bring along some money. Also do remember to bring your grandparents day form and ask your parents when will you be available in the holidays between 28th Nov to 21st Dec as we will be arranging the BBSGB duties on that day too. If you see this please pass it to as many of your platoon mates as possible. Thanks

how how how?

Hi

I was looking at the badgework for the year when i dropped my jaws.

How can it be that

1. 50% of plt 3 fail to get Senior Prof Star?
2. approx 50% from each platoon to fail adventure coursework?

Adventure badgework has been one of our strengths. We take pride in developing Boys who can navigate well in different types of terrain. What has happened? Why did your leave some parts of question paper blank?

Does it mean i have to comeout with intensive programme for the whole company in 2010?

I start to wonder if i am too nice to your...or worst still, should i get a fiercer instructor or officer to teach so that your will listen?

Have you ever wondered....

Hi

It's time for a good long post again.

Boys, take this chance to stop what you are doing, and think about what you will be like 5 years from now. How is it going to be like? Is it going to be another round of education ( i mean JC, Poly, Uni and some of your NS)? Or is there more to it?

I have been thinking alot on intelligence and education, something that is very sensitive in today's society. What is intelligence? Is it merely just paper qualification?

Is intelligence something that is predetermined by your body cells (for the older ones, it's genes)? Does your surroundings play a part as well?

Well, i believe its more than just genes and surroundings. It is about YOURSELF as well. Imagine, you have the best body (the best brain), you have the most conducive environment to study and excel, but you choose not to excel, then whose's fault is it?

So in exams (be it school exams or BB theory papers), it is not just your body's capability, your environment and most importantly, you yourself play an important part as well. Whether you choose to make it a point to revise for your exams, whether you choose to give up in your studies or not, you have a say in it.

To those who are not so smart, don't be discouraged. Hardwork and determination play an important role as well. If you don't understand the topic, ask. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask your friends or your teachers.

But then again, intelligence and education are only half of your training to the job(s) you are going to have in the future. The other half is about how you relate to people, how you handle things. This is also known as the soft skills.

I hope that in the past 10 (nearly) months, you would have gained something from BB. I hope that you would have learned skills that are essential in your lives.

In short, if you want to excel, you have to play a part as well.

Do take time to reflect even though most (if not all) of your should be busy revising for for EOY examinations now.

And yes, let's pray and work hard. We are on track for JM Fraser Gold this year. Thank God.

Reminder for Drills Stage 2 Theory Test

Hi Platoon 2 and 3,

This is a reminder that for those who have failed your Drills Stage 2, you will be taking your theory retest this coming parade on Friday (18 September 2009). I will be invigilating the test. Please make sure you have studied properly for it, because there will be NO FURTHER RETEST. If after this test you have still failed overall, you will not be awarded with the Stage 2 white cloth, and will have to retake your Drills 2 syllabus and assessment next year.

Please note that if I find any stupid answers in this test, you will IMMEDIATELY fail. You have been warned. I have been very patient and accepting in the past few tests, but I have come to realise this will not be good for my health in the long run. Those who are persistent in giving me "creative" answers will face "creative" consequences, which are not for the faint-hearted. I will remind all candidates again before commencement of the test.

CHARACTER QUEST

And so it was the life of Ah Beng has ended...

Hahahas to all the Boys who do not know what im talking about, well thats basically the theme for our outdoor segment, playing the life of Ah Beng and helping him strive in society by striking a balance of knowledge, wealth, health, relationship in our lives. The theme this year was TAKE YOUR STAND as we studied the lives of Jonah, Elijah and Daniel and how they stood for God.

Well I must admit I was quite disappointed with the results as we really did work hard and prepared lots for this competition (started preparing since june hols) and was abit emo during the dinner. But I guess most importantly was that we have gained something more valuable through the process such as our bonds with one another, training our character and also having lotsa fun (esp the games ;)

I learnt what Jonah learnt - was that our ways may not be God's ways and ultimately He is in control of everything. No matter what, He has the best plan of us and we cant escape it. Even though we might not see it now but in time to come, I'm sure we will. This has also taught me yet again that winning is not everything but its the relationships that you build that will last forever. Awards and titles will fade away but our memories and experiences in life will last forever.

Thank you God for seeing us through this competition and I pray that as we await the honour roll, we will trust you that you have the best plan for us.

cheers JIAYOU to all for da exams

(unfortunately cant upload pics sien or else all da unglam stuff will be shown lol)

Hmm..CPR is on the news!

Hi Boys

For those who have read today's (30th july) Straits Times, you would have come across an article on SAF introducing CPR to the recruits. I guess it's a good reading material to understand how important CPR and AED are when there is a cardiac arrest (aka heart attack). There are some other infomation that may be interesting to you as well

So, it goes to show that BB has a training programme that prepares our Boys for life ;)

For those who have not read the article, here it is;)

Mr Bay
p.s. pardon my blogging skills and oh, REC Terence Chung won't get to learn it because it's introduced in 2010!

will your anchor hold?

Dear Boys,

I would like to share with your 1 BB Song. It's called the Anchor Song. For those who have attended the Enrolment Service, it was the 1st piece of music for the video presentation. I will only list 1 stanza and the chorus.

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift or firm remain?

Chorus: We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll;
Fastened to the rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviours love.

I hope that this stanza and chorus helps YOU to reflect about your life and the anchor that holds you. When the crisis comes (i am sure that each one of us will go through at least one), will your anchor hold?

I came across a shoplifting case today. This person was caught stealing something from a provision shop. If the person were to be you, would your character hold you and steer you away from this temptation (to steal)?

All of us know the model answer, but is it our real answer? Someone of a higher authority (than me) remarked that if you do not come clean with your mistakes, we (meaning others) cannot help you to be accountable and make the change.

In life, we have our own crisis and temptation. To a certain degree of extent, the type of crisis and temptation that each one of us face will be slightly different from one another. I hope that even as we strive towards the external gold (awards and achievements), let us not forget that inner gold (character) matters more. If we do not have this inner gold, we have a higher chance of succumbing to the temptations and thus lead to a more disastrous consequence(s). Who is it that will mould our inner gold? God? Parents? or friends?

I hope that in BB, your do not learn and achieve just the skills (awards). Set a higher standard for yourselves. Aim for inner gold. Aim to be someone who can be strong to withstand or flee from the temptation. Don't just come for parade just for the fun. Come because you know that you will learn lifeskills and equip yourselves with tactics to deal with your life.

Read for Knowledge

Origin of Salute

Saluting is one of the most common and basic forms of military courtesy. It is basically an exchange of greetings between military and/or uniformed service personnal.

The history of saluting has many pausible origins. Some believe that during the "Age of Chivalry" when two knights met, the raised their visors to expose their faces. This allowed the knights to recognise their allies from their enemies. The raising of visor always performed with the right hand. During the "Middle Ages", men wore heavy capes to conceal their swords. When two men greeted each other they would raise their right arm to show that it was not on the sword hilt. Greeting someone without raising your right arm could potentially mean that you were about to attack. During the days of the Borgians, assassination by using knife or dagger was common. When greeting someone the right hand was raised to show that the person was not concealing a dagger.

Saluting with the open hand indicated friendly intentions and can be traced back to the middle ages where travellers also held their open hands up inorder to indicate that they had no weapons in their possession capable of injuring others. It also dated back several hundred years to the days when fighting men wore armour. Thus, when outside the safety of walled castle, people often had to defend themselve. Therefore, as the knight rode through the forest, he rode with his hand near his sword. When he met someone he recognised as a friend, he raised his empty hand to show he was not challenging the person. This action was a sign of trust and respect. The present day salute is a symbol of greeting, of mutual trust and confidence, initiated by the junior in rank, but with no loss of dignity on either side.

There are other forms of salutes beside the hand salute such as the sword salute, gun salute and rifle salute. As these salutes signify gesture of friendship and comradeship.

Hi Boys

This concern those who has not submitted their BB Week cards. You are to submit before this friday parade to MR CLEMENT TAN. Else...dun blame me if you stick to this current rank you are holding to when the next promotion come (in OCT).

For those who have put in effort, thanks so much for your hard work and punctuality. The excel sheet has very specific detail (ie who has given how much).

To the 2 who have collected $2 and $4. Are your trying to prove my judgement right? Is that really all your effort?

BB Adventure Quest

Hellos everyone,

Sad to announce that the AQ team did not clinch the top 10 places and had fell far from our expectations. However, we definitely made it to the top 40 .Although we didnt achieve the best of results, we gained experiences through the race which after all, are what matters to us. The team bonding that we had, the teamwork that we shown and the FUN that we had definitely were great. There were times when we felt down, especially during the first leg when we were one of the last teams. We encouraged each other to move on and to push ourselves to the limits and we finally closed up the gaps and we won almost two thirds of the total number of teams. We knew that we didnt do well in the first leg, but we didnt give up, this is the spirit of sportsmen, and we definitely hope that you guys will have this spirit that your seniors had shown in the race, and that during parades and the camps ahead, you guys will perform your best. This race had proved to be a challenging one, and I hope that future AQ teams will do their best, participate FULLY in all trainings and to give it all they can in the AQ next year. Your seniors and captain had witness the team spirit of other schools. For example, St hildas, they exhibited a very great and strong team bonds and the cheerings that we heard were exemplary. Of course, we do not expect you guys to use drums and sticks to cheer for your fellow Boys, but a little encouragement does go a long way.

For those who did not get the chance to participate, you will get your chance next year. As for some people, I hope that your will change your attitude for the better. Next year's AQ team selection would definitely be strict due to certain things that happened this year, so that only people who are seriously interested can participate.

Your AQ ic,
Sgt Junkang

The 45th COY has acheived a SILVER HONOUR ROLL

Results of the AQ race for top 10 can be found at http://www.bb.org.sg/cos/o.x?c=/wbn/pagetree&func=view&rid=46936

5th Uniformed Groups Bowling Championship

Gd'day people,

My second post. As what I briefed you guys on friday, there's this bowling competition going on on 5th June. Unfortunately, because it clashes with our june camp, we'll not open this competition to you guys so there will be no disruptions to the camp because of the competition.

You guys can do your own bowling competition after your exams. The winner may get a free meal from the losers. : )

That's all from me.

hmmm food for thought

hi guys

I believed that most of your have heard what mdm liew has shared this morning about the incident yesterday. Yes it is sad and yes its unfortuante and yes, she is young.

But what is behind all this is that

1. we are a time bomb ourselves. We are not terrorists but we have a limited time on earth. We don't know know what is in the future and we don't know what lies ahead of us. we don't know when we will 'explode' and say bye to this world.

2. the best medical procedures or personnels will not have a perfect recovery rate. Even with the best skill and staff, we, humans, are still finite in our knowledge and thus unable to perform the most complex procedures (that we might not even have known) in order save lives. The other perspective is that human organs fail us as well. No matter what we do, we cannot bring back the biological age of the organs. As we grow older, the signs of aging in organs will be more evident.

3. we have the capability and capacity to impact people, no matter how 'small' we think we are Our daily interactions and actions can be seen, felt and left behind. Whether we choose to be loving or not will have an impact on other people especially the people around you. Rem how 'you char kway' or fried dough sticks come about? Choose and make your decision wisely. Think about the consequences before doing aything.

4. we should seize the day. Yes, precisely because we don't know the future all the more we must make it a point to live like there is no tomorrow. Got a dream that is not fulfilled? Better work towards it now. Better do now than procrastinate. Don't wait till the time when u think back n remember all your dreams undone. Go before it's too late.

Better start thinking and doing now! Some of your are going to prepare for your exams/mid years and etc...do find time to focus and revise the exam topics

With love
Mr Bay

RTC/LDC

Hello Company! (:

I hope that officers and instructors will allow me for this post. Ok guys! Lets start by saying Plt 1, i really have a great sense of accomplishment after i've seen u all gone thru this camp. From the start of this camp (friday). I see your all got "tekan". From the 1st parade, i see you all know nothing untill now that u all have gotten ur Target Batch and promoted to Private. Incase you don know, i was standing at the back of Plt 1. I see you all, stand at attention smartly and shouted " YES CSM " I was really so happy. Happy to see you all endure thru this camp, perserver thru the expedition. You people are the special and unique batch of sec 1s. And im really very and glad to be your PLT SGT. I see you all grow up during the camp, grow in ur indepent, grow in ur perserverance and endurance. This camp is the last camp Sgt Boo And me will be with you all already. Soon, in just a few more weeks, we are going to step down already. We wont be coming for parade so often already. Plt 1, please really do rmb wat we taught you all and apply to it to any in-charge not only towards us. Keep the standard throughout the years in BB and tat will do ur Plt Sgt proud (:

Plt 2, im oso really happy tat all of you got promoted to LCP. I have been your I/C for few parades and observed all of you. I still rmb the 1st few times when i take over you all, i still rmb the attitudes you all gave me. I don blame you all because i know this is not entirely ur fault. My past in BB have not really gave you all a very GOOD impression, instead is rather bad. But im really very happy that now you all "accept" me already. I still rmb the "present" you all gave me! Rmb 1 day after drill training, u all come together and do the FUYOO "cheer" for me? Yup! I still rmb. Each and everyone of you will be in my heart even when im not around in parades, when im out of this school and when im in ITE. You people is the 1st Plt i ever take charge b4. And for the camp, im really glad that you all didnt corner the sec 1s and do things on your own, i see you all interact with the sec 1 and teach them some things, talk to them about your past in BB. Im really glad that u all went forward to help the sec 1 and have patience with them although some of them were quite "irritating". But afterall, they're still cute rite?! (: and yes! you people are going to lead the company already, keep it up ur standards, lead the juniors well! Make them shine as bright as you. Wat you all will become is a accomplishment to us. Do well, Lead well! The 4 of you tat are going for NDP 2009, i wish you all, All the best in your trainings. Endure! Endure like how you all endure thru when i punish you all during drill com trainings. You all are the oneS!

RTC & LDC field cooking

Hi Boys

I realised that some of your are asking me how i managed to cook the minced meat with tofu.

For a family of 6

350g of minced meat
1 packet of silken tofu
pepper
salt
light soya sauce
oyster sauce
vegetarian oyster sauce (mushroom sauce)
topioca powder
water

1. Marinate the mince meat with around 1 tablespoon of salt, sesame oil  and light soya sauce. Leave it for half an hour.
2.Chop the tofu into very very very small pieces, and put the topica powder into a bowl of water.
3. Heat the wok, add in a small amount of oil. Ensure that it is medium heat.
4. When it is ready (you can try to feel th heat), add in the meat and stir fry.
5. Add in water, oyster sauce, vegetarian oyster sauce and around half a bowl of water.
6. Continue to stir fry, you will see bubbles popping out towards surface.
7. The meat will turn brown...then add in the tofu and continue stirring.
8. After a while, bubbles will pop up again. Now is the time to add in your tapoica powder mixed with water into the wok.
9. Switch off the gas and continue to stir the meat and tofu. Ensure that it is well mixed. If you need, add in more seasoning.
10. tata! done

Those who are going for this year's NDP take note:

1. FULL attendance of all training sessions and rehearsals is expected of participants to qualify for both the CCA points and National Event Badge.

2. Participation is for Boys who are in Sec 2 and above who have attained Drill Stage Two Award (Boys should be able to march correctly and in timing). Priority should be given to Sec 3 Boys. The Organisers have reminded us that Non-Singaporean Citizens are not allowed to participate in the parade.

3. In view of the rigorous training and schedule, Boys with any pre-existing medical conditions that would render them unfit to participate fully in the rehearsals and actual parade will NOT be accepted. Boys with back problems should also be advised not to participate.

4. Boys will need to put on spectacles with clear lenses (no coloured or transition lenses), with black frame (no coloured frame is allowed).

5. A selection exercise will be conducted on either 19 March or 20 March, 3 - 5 pm, at BB Campus in BB Day Dress (Full Uniform). All applicants need to make it for one of these 2 sessions to make it into the contingent.

6. Boys should be able to attend all the rehearsals, unless they have examinations during the period, in which case they will be exempted with valid letters from their schools. The rehearsal dates, and the in-house (BB) selection and training dates, will be confirmed later, together with the timing for the rehearsals. Boys are asked to keep all Saturdays from mid April to 9 August free from 9 am to 9 pm. In the event of rain, the next day (a Sunday) may be used as a replacement date, at NDP Parade & Ceremonies Committee’s discretion.

7. BB Officers and Teachers who are not involved in the NDP are not allowed to visit or follow their Boys to any of the NDP dates for security and accountability issues.

Boom De Ya Da!

Please view the video below before proceeding to read the rest of the post.

This post might put me at risk of having additional birds on my shoulders, but I don't care =P.

What started out as posting a comment on Sir Terence's status on Facebook led me to the above video, an advertisement of some sorts from the Discovery Channel.

A video I watched and have rewatched 3 times since I first saw it till now.

You might not think of it as something significant. But watch the video again and you might catch at what I'm trying to say.

Did you notice how much effort went into filming that video? How much scripting, editing, directing and post-production had to go into making that video? It only lasted 1 minute or so but I am quite sure it took at least a few months or maybe even an entire year's worth of work to get that video right.

The number of places they had to travel to.
The number of phenomenons they had to wait for. (You don't see tornadoes, fireworks displays and giant squids everyday do you?)
The amount of effort put into editing and timing the shots carefully such that it came out as an appealing video.
The people who appeared in the video.

The reason why I say this is because most of these people who were singing the song are actually busy people. Researchers, historians, scientists, hosts of their own shows. I could only recognise Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman from Mythbusters (the scene where one guy sets the other on fire) and Stephen Hawking, world-renowned theoretical physicist and applied mathematician (in the wheelchair). It isn't easy for the production team to schedule appointments and filming sequences with these people, and yet they still managed to pull it off.

In the video you see many things that exist in this world. Weather phenomena, history, geography, history, biodiversity, flora and fauna, the environment. When I first saw the video I was awed by all these majestic things and how complex and beautiful the world actually is. You don't have to look far to get a glimpse of this beautiful world. That's because WE are all part of this beautiful world.

Likewise in the Company, each Boy and each individual is unique in their own way, and contributes to the Company in their own way. Have you ever thought that even if one person were to be missing, the Company would not be same as what it is today? Would the Company be where it is today without anyone of you?

The answer is no.

The Officers and Primers (Instructors) recognise that, and that is why we value and appreciate each and every one of you. Just imagine the Company as the world. Therefore each and everyone of you would be the magnificent sights that exist in the world. The people who got together to produce and film this video would be the Officers and Primers, who are doing their very best to make this world as beautiful and as magnificent as it should be. Wouldn't this world be a much better place if everyone could give in their bestest and most sincere efforts to help this world along?

Always remember that each and every one of you have great potential to become great people, and you could help by helping others to bring out their potential. Remember to appreciate one another and love one another as friends and brothers. Always remember that everyone in the Company will be there for you when you need them.

Lots of love,
Instructor Hongyou

Kayaking 1 star and 2 star: This sat we are going to kallang for our expedition. Those who have expressed their interests BUT not in the course, i am sorry but have to reject ur suggestion as there may not be enough kayaks. I will announce the details this friday.

For those who did not sign up the 1 star course, IF we are going to have a kayaking expedition, your WILL NOT have your own kayak. Thus, your may not have as much fun as those who will be having their own single kayaks. I will try to arrange for spray deck for the 2 Star;)

Sec3s: I hope that you have been preparing for the RTC. Do take this chance to ask ur officers and instructors what is the standard that has been set for your (read: our expectations). This exposure to leadership during RTC will prepare your for future leaderhip role(s) in BB this year.

Good news, i am considering letting your (sec 3s) hold on to leadership position early if your (sec 3s) can perform in RTC. Yes, i mean it. If your can work well as a team, communicate well, lead well and plan well, i do not see why i should hold your back from your leadership opportunities. This year's NCO council will have some changes. There will be more 'freeplay' for the NCO council. More avenues to address your issues and more chances to initiate some projects. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO PERFORM AND CONVINCE US (officers and instructors)!

Potential Founders' Men: I will be bringing the awards file this friday. Do your necessary photocopying and let me sign forms tt your need me to sign.

Those who are keen to go for NDP: As what Mr Chung has mentioned, this year's NDP is going to be exciting. Those who have tickets can consider giving me 1 so tt i can go n see your on the actual day (yes, i want to be there to see your, not some other girls)

Do read the announcements on the noticeboard as well. By the way, this friday there will be 2-3 slots of captain's address. I will be spending time talking to your either at platoon level or in small gp level. There will be some activities and i will give your some time to talk as well. Feel free to address your concerns so that we know how we can mentor/advice your.

And yes, your are missed! And yes, i am glad that my posted has taken up some substantial amount of space;)

National Day Parade 2009

Hi Boys

Current I only have 7 names with me who are interested on going for this year's NDP, still got 3 more vacancy so do consider about it as this year Parade and Ceremony will be totally different from past few years.

Some major difference between this year and previous years P&C: (let you all excited a bit)

1. This year will be a "night" parade, timing will start from around 7.18pm till 8pm.

2. ALL contingents will march pass President.

3. Road march will be longer than previous 2 years, heard that will march pass CityHall.

4. Uniform Group who are better in drills will lead the whole Row B (I presume leading all UGs and Army Contingent into the parade ground *excluding GOH*)

5. Parade will be much nearer to the audience, the large LDC screen will be in the middle of the parade ground. So you all imaging how near and close it will be.

6. Presidential Gun Salute will be floating and fired beside the floating platform.

For point number 4, We (BB Military Contingent Trainers + BB Officers) will and make sure that Boys' Brigade will take this prestigious role. So there will definately have internal training and selection, RSM for this year's parade will personally come down to our training venue to observe and decide which UG will take the lead.

The first Mass Brief has passed, I believe HQ will soon sending email to all captains and officers to register Boys for NDP.

So do consider about it again, dont miss this once in a life time opporunity.
