The Will To Do What's Right
And being in agony, [Jesus] prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like drops of blood. Luke 22:44

Discipline is doing what you really don't want to do, so that you can do what you really want to do. It's paying the price in the little things so that you can buy the bigger thing.

Disciplined leaders must possess . . .

1. Disciplined Thinking: You can't get far in life if you don't use your head. If you keep your mind active and regularly take on mental challenges, you will develop the kind of disciplined thinking that will help you with whatever you endeavor to do.

2. Disciplined Emotions: People have just two choices when it comes to their emotions: they can master their emotions or be mastered by them. You shouldn't let your feelings prevent you from doing what you should or drive you to do things you shouldn't.

3. Disciplined Actions: Sharpening your mind and controlling your emotions are important, but they can take you only so far. Action is what separates the winners from the losers. Your actions always reflect your degree of discipline.

Adapted from The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player

Reflection for RTC/LDC 2013

Dear Boys,

Hope you are enjoying your well-deserved rest now.

I would like to leave some food for thoughts here:

"Discipline without direction soon becomes a drudgery. In sports, if the athlete does not have a target in mind, he will become listless and futile in his training. As spiritual disciplines train us to become like Jesus, we need to have a purpose before us. It could be to develop character, or some virtues or fruit of the Spirit in our lives. A purpose could be seasonal so that we will not become stagnant and bored with just life. As individuals, discipline defines and shapes our behaviour."

I hope that you would be able to see discipline in a different light, and that can be used to build you up as a person.

Just like a sportsman stays disciplined to train for his competition, a person with self-discipline can set out and achieve his goals easily. In chinese, there is a saying: 有志者事竟成. Most often than not, we also need discipline to stay on the right path. For example, you stay disciplined enough not to commit crimes so that you would not be arrested.

Training for a competition is tough and training to be disciplined requires effort as well. Thus, people may choose to go for the easy way out. I urge you to reconsider the benefits of being disciplined whenever you are tempted to choose the easy way out!

Thus, by grasping the essential part for this skill during camp, i hope that you will continue to build on your self-discipline so that it will be able to put you in good stead for your future endeavours.
